When Gotham Knights begins, it wastes no time setting up the narrative and building intrigue around the state of Gotham City post-Batman. In these opening moments, you’ll be faced with a decision: choosing your hero. In this initial selection phase, it doesn’t really matter who you pick. Go with your gut and pick whomever you think is the coolest; they’re all fun to play as, and there’s no wrong answer this early in the game.
You won’t find Mission 1.1 or Mission 1.2 easier or harder based on your selection. But as you progress, you’ll want to change characters to find the best one for your playstyle.
How to Switch Characters
You gain the ability to switch and change characters after completing Mission 1.2: The Langstrom Drive. Once you’ve begun Mission 1.3: Weird Science, look to the left of the Batcomputer in the Belfry. You’ll see four suits hanging up in the back corner, one for each hero. From left to right, there’s Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, and Red Hood.
Walk up to any costume, and interact with it to see the character’s description, including their areas of expertise and current power level. Select the input for “Confirm” (found in the lower right corner of the screen), and you’ll reload into the Belfry as your chosen hero. You cannot change heroes while out on patrol; you must change characters in the Belfry during the day (between patrols).
It’s also worth noting that experience points and ability points are conferred to all characters equally, meaning those at the Belfry won’t have to be leveled separately; they’ll be the same level as your main when and if you choose to change characters. However, each hero has their own Knighthood Challenges and tasks like Premeditated Crimes to grind, and you must take heroes on patrol to obtain new gear and blueprints for their suits, melee weapons, and ranged weapons.
Overall, it’s a good strategy to try and switch up heroes every night to knock out their Knighthood Challenges as quickly as possible, which gives you access to their gliding abilities and helps you get around the city from mission to mission much more quickly.
